I WAS A VERY NAUGHTY KID, Santa would not be pleased. I remember one year I raided my mom’s closet trying to discover where she hid the presents for Christmas. I slowly unwrapped each gift which bore my name, trying to peek what it was. :-)

But of course the biggest memories would be the Christmas meals! The Christmas Eve meal, or Noche Buena was always very much anticipated. In our family, compared to other families, it was simple. Eaten after attending Midnight Mass, the spread on the table would consist of Christmas Ham with pandesal (bread rolls) and Quezo de Bola (round Edam cheese), all washed down freshly made local hot chocolate. I’m sure there were many other dishes, but for me these were the ones I cherished. Christmas Day lunch was different. We had lechon or roasted pig, kare-kare (ox tail peanut stew), caldereta (spicy beef stew) and many more. It was the type of family lunch which went on and on, soon it would be dinner time and we would eat again.

This year, we chose White Christmas as our theme. I think many of us who live in Asia secretly dream of a very cold and snowy Christmas. But having the decor all laid out just makes the season more celebratory I feel. The Mandarin Oriental Jakarta’s food and beverage team went all out to help us showcase our White Christmas. Chefs Cyril Calmet and Remi Martinazzo filled the table with the best the hotel has to offer this year. We also share a few festive recipes from chefs Ahmad Gojali of Fairmont Jakarta, Daniel Kuser of The Westin Jakarta and Michael Clinton of Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta which you can easily do at home. And closer to home for me, Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia, Maria Lumen Isleta, welcomes us into her home and brings out her Christmas finery and best dishes to show how we Filipinos celebrate the festive season.

As we wind down the year and begin the parties and celebrations, remember that food bring people together and that’s when great memories are made. From the FoodieS Family Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
